Life on Mars (Sam & Gene hold hands)
I've been reading about various different fandoms lately and the troubles they harbour and it got me thinking a lot about Life on Mars fandom. In doing so, I constructed this list: things I am thankful for regarding Life on Mars fandom.

1. No anonmeme. And by this I don't mean kinkmeme (which we do have, and which we should probably maintain as much as possible), but a place to which people go to bitch about others. We've never had one, as far as I am aware. This is so pleasing.

2. Very few shipwars. In my recollection, we've almost never had any kind of "my ship is better than your ship" nonsense.

3. A lack of wank in general, actually. I'm pretty sure I'm the wankiest member of LoM fandom, and considering about 96% of my wank is directed towards the show's creators? They're excellent wank statistics.

4. A delightfully high ratio of good to bad fic, vids and artwork. The talent we have in our little fandom that could is astounding.

5. Ambience and atmosphere. So many people are friendly, non-judgemental, welcoming, and, all in all, rad.

So, we may sometimes be very quiet, and sure, I'd love more of everything, but for the most part? Thank you, non-wanky fandom of my heart. I mean it.

Definitely no shipwars, though as a Sam/Annie 'shipper I'll have to say it does kinda feel like Sam/Gene is the only game in town. I don't feel like anyone ever criticized my 'ship; it just got lonely.

Yeah, I can see how you'd feel like that. I can't criticise, myself, because, I haven't written S/A for a while. But I still want to. Because I am fickle.

I totally recommend checking out margo_kim's fics if you're wanting Annie. She does a lovely job.

*nods* It is a very genteel place to play.

I think the fact that A2A exists may contribute to #2 - 5, as the more rabid fen tend to stick to currently-running or massively-large fandoms, IMO. Not to say that them what I hang with who also like A2A are rabid, because I tend to avoid drama like the plague.

Glad you agree.

I think that even were A2A not to exist, these would all still hold true --- ;) This post was basically a "yeah, we're tiny, but hey, these are the benefits of tinydom."

I'm still aghast about the anonmeme... thing. To me it amounts to organized bullying and GAH! Nooooooooooo. I've actually only ran across them in the mega-sized fandoms.

I'm trying to think but I don't think I've seen any inkling of shipwars either. I think, in part, that's down to how many writers we've had in the fandom who might have a marked 'ship preference but still write for other characters and other pairs. It's all felt very fluid at times. *g*

The lack of wank is remarkable and not just down to the size of the fandom. I've wandered through smaller and functionally smaller fandoms and seen a much bigger load of it. I think perhaps it's harder to generate it with a larger range of ships with that more fluid edge and the fandom's general tolerance (at the very least) for a much wider range of topics and odd pairings.

It's been quiet for a very loooooooooooong time now. I'm hoping the BB might help with that.

I know it's not only down to the size of the fandom that we're so lacking in wank. It's also the people who are involved in the fandom. The fabulous people. ♥

The anonmeme thing makes no sense to me, none at all. It's so very petty, ugh. And cruel, too. I just --- WHY? I understand the occasional need to have a private bitch session (and would mostly only have it with myself), but to put it in a place where the person can find it? And the trivial shit people pick apart too. MASSIVE UGH.

... I'm still shining on like a crazy diamond in LoM fandom. I always did and I always shall.

...the creators wank enough on their own, surely? *blinks innocently*

*waits for drumroll that never comes*

In general, I'm inclined to agree. It's an excellent fandom, and I'm grateful to have been a tiny part of it. :)

What do you mean "to have been?" You're not coming back? I've been harbouring notions of you reappearing like the phoenix from the flames.

Hear, hear! :D Every time I wander over to Fandom_Wank, I am eternally grateful for the awesomeness of LoM fandom and its lack of wank.

Everyone's so civil. It's a wonder to behold.

I find it amusing that now that dakfinv and I live together (Thank you, LoM fandom, for introducing us), the two fans who, to my knowledge, generated the most wank, live together. (I do like to think we were rather innocent when it came to the wank we were involved in. I know Dak was.).
3rd-Mar-2011 02:45 pm (UTC)
I remember Dak's incident --- it was during one of the times I was away and I was so annoyed I wasn't on hand to shut it down immediately, but what happened with you?

I also don't think either of you started the wank.

It has felt very quiet since the turn of the year... I wonder if that's due to just what goes on in people's lives in this season, and I almost wonder if the BB has caused some quieting, because people are working on BB fic rather than shorter fics...
3rd-Mar-2011 12:36 pm (UTC)
...people are working on BB fic...
.... Bugger! I knew there was something I should be doing!
3rd-Mar-2011 12:38 pm (UTC)
I love this post. I agree with every sentiment and it's all the reasons I won't be leaving just yet ♥
3rd-Mar-2011 02:43 pm (UTC)

These are also the reasons I've stuck around so long. Well, this and obsession.
3rd-Mar-2011 01:47 pm (UTC)
What exactly does "wank" mean in this context?
3rd-Mar-2011 02:05 pm (UTC)
In fandom terms, when someone's being wanky, or a fandom has a lot of wank, they're:

a) Not following common etiquette because they're deciding to be an asshat. So, if you're being a wanker, you're being rude/deliberately obtuse/[very rarely] unintentionally doing the wrong thing.
b) Going on about something trivial endlessly, despite the fact no logical or rational people care.
c) Causing trouble with other people in the fandom because of asshattishness.
d) Engaging in mental masturbation.

I adore, and I mean, ADORE this fandom. It is the first and only one I've been active in (in this internet age, anyway) and I am just absolutely delighted with the amazing quality of fic and talent. As far as I can tell it has always been thus. I've whined about this before, though; it makes me sad that people move on. Inevitable, perhaps, but one of the amazing things to me about online fandom is how CONNECTED one can be to other fen, and it bums me out that there are so many authors who have moved on who I will never get to connect to.
3rd-Mar-2011 02:07 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that aspect bums me out too, especially since I was in due South fandom, which was going strong (and still kinda is) at least ten years after the show had finished!

I agree with everything you said <3 This is the only fandom I've ever participated in this much, and everyone's so friendly and wonderful that I never want to leave.

It has been quiet recently... But personally, I don't mind that. Because while bigger fandoms may be producing fic of various quality every five minutes, you always know that anything posted to the LoM fandom will be fabulous and definitely worth waiting for.

I also like the way that because this fandom is small, you're able to recognise names more easily and anyone you talk to, you're likely to remember. You don't feel 'lost in the crowd', so to speak. It's wonderful here XD

Yes, the sense that everyone knows each other is lovely, I agree.
