Day 06 (favorite episode of your favorite t.v show): Episode 1.02 of Life on Mars

I have the original reaction post here (February 2006.)

The second episode of Life on Mars is when the much-needed humour missing from the first episode is not only there, but exploited, and, damn, it's brilliant. I love the balance of the truly gut-wrenching scene where we discover June's been shot and the silly, silly comedy of Gene going 'E... I dunno' in a bad Geordie accent. Gene's bastard side gets to shine in this episode. But his good side does too. And then there's Leonard, who remains my favourite guest character in any show ever. Also, I was already slashing Sam/Gene ♥ (because, DUDE, POKER SCENE. AWKWARD DARTS CONVERSATION. POST-COITAL CIGARETTES AND CONFESSIONS. SAM CALLING OUT FOR GENE. ADORING GRINS AFTER SAVED LIVES. MY HEART EXPLODES WITH LOVE FOR THEM.)

It's not only entertaining, it's damn good writing. The 1973 world is opened up further, the characters are given more depth, relationships develop. Not to mention it's so gorgeously shot, ugh. Love, love, love.

I think episode 2 is what got me accidentally mainlining most of the rest of the first series in, um, two nights or something ridiculous like that (I jumped into the show either right before or right after episode 8 aired, I can't remember now). Episode 1 hit my embarrassment squick a bit too often on Sam's behalf, but 2--yeah, it was pretty brilliant.

Episode 2 is what made me fall in love. I'd liked episode 1, but I hadn't been insanely in love. It's so fabulous.

There are so many wonderful things to love about episode 2 (let's not forget the swimming trunks!), but I think the awkward darts conversation is what really did me in.

The awkward darts conversation is just darling, because it comes across, it really comes across, as Sam and Gene wanting to ask each other on a date and just being too shy (this was to change by episode 1.07.)

I *squirm* with the love of this.

Tiny beads of sweat on my brow from the cinematography. Pains in my chest from the music. Shortness of breath from the perfectness of Leonard. My left arm goes numb from the June-shooting scene.

Er. Yeah.

Now that I think of it, this *was* the episode that made me want to keep watching. I liked the first one but it took me awhile to watch the second one- but once I did... *weeeeeee! smiley*
