Day 04 (your favorite show ever): Life on Mars [UK]

Believe it or not, this was actually something I had to think about. I don't, for instance, think Life on Mars was the best show ever made. I have certainly loved other shows nearly as much as I adore Life on Mars. Plus, I have 'issues'. The finale disappointed and confused the hell out of me for several reasons, and I can still, surprisingly, rant on at length about it if I so wish (I won't this time, I promise.) However, for anything it got even slightly wrong, Life on Mars got nine billion things right. I loved and continue to love almost everything about it; the sets, costumes and myriad details, the way it was shot, the use of music, the acting, the characters, the dialogue, the incidental plots, major elements of the overarching plot. It was thrilling! And thought-provoking! And touching! It got under my skin, in so many brilliant ways. I love that this show had excitingly ridiculous things like car chases and explosions, and yet managed poignancy in regards to issues such as corruption and the many isms inherent in our world. I love that it could be as funny as it was dramatic, that it generally steered away from melodrama. I love that it felt nostalgic, but rarely in a mocking way, and that it was very, very subtle, even though it could have been GIGANTIC CHEESE. I love that it made me feel so much for the characters I would jump up and down in my seat and make squeaky noises, and cry, and giggle, and clap. (I love that it can still make me do that.) It got the balance so fucking right, I am still surprised, when I rewatch an episode, by just how damn good it is. I've watched a lot, a lot of quality tv, and none of it quite compares to Life on Mars in the 'owns my heart and soul' stakes. So, yes, it's safe to say it really is my favourite ever show. Like you're surprised.

I am shocked by this choice!:p

If I had to rank my shows, it would probably be #2 or #3 on my list. Either it or Spaced would my second favourite series ever. Now, I feel like ranking them! But it would get ridiculous as there would probably be many, many ties.

See, Spaced and Dexter both come really fucking close. But I had to weigh in things like creative output and longevity of crazy heart-eyed passion, and yeah, LoM won out.

crazy heart-eyed passion

Hee, I just liked the phrase. For me, emotional resonance also has a lot to do with it. For example, I could say that something like Deadwood(which I do love but don't quite have an emotional connection with)is objectively better than either Life on Mars or Homicide: Life on the Street. But I love both of those series much more than Deadwood because they register with me in a very personal way, that I find a bit hard to explain or quantify.

I haven't watched Deadwood yet. I have it, on Charlie Brooker's recommendation, but Brooker also loves Peep Show, so I confess I've been a little 'argh, augh!' Also, I need to finish Peep Show (soon! Thank fuck it's soon!)

Actually, I've been meaning to catch Deadwood for years and years and years. Before it even aired, I read an article about it and went 'ooooh, that sounds interesting!', but it's taken me a while.

Hee, well, we can't all share the exact same taste, even with Charlie. It would get dull!

Deadwood may not be for everyone but I think it is much more accessible than Peep Show which is understandably polarizing.

I can't believe you are continuing with Peep Show despite how it makes you feel. That's dedication!

The lure of David Mitchell is a powerful and unwieldy thing. Like a super-motorised vacuum cleaner. You think it should stop trying to gobble everything in sight, but it doesn't, it just wants more. (And there are moments when I laugh, and the fucked up dynamics of the relationship that is Mark/Jeremy makes for painfully compelling viewing.)

Hmm, yes, the power of David Mitchell is incredibly strong.

One of my favourite things about Peep Show is Mark/Jeremy's fucked up dynamic, the show is essentially an incredibly twisted love story.

Seconding the love for Deadwood. Amazing use of language and there is just nothing I've ever seen like Ian McShane's performance.

Life on Mars is everything Ashes to Ashes wanted to be and could never achieve. Sad, but pathetically true. I still don't understand people who say they preferred A2A. How can you prefer something that's substandard in every way? But, people say these things, and I'm an idiot who up until twelve hours ago thought there was such a thing as French onions, so who the hell am I to judge?

I can't understand why people preferred A2A either & I don't think I ever will. I've tried.

Heyo! I was hoping we could talk briefly about futurama's official policies about how to post stuff from the new eps. I figure we could either do official discussion posts for each ep, or let people do their own thing but with strict spoiler policies. Any thoughts? (C/P'ing this comment in GGZ's journal too!)

I agree with the idea of official discussion posts. That way, it's all central. It could have its own tag as well.

Awwwww! Your love for LoM is heartwarming. And yay you for giving the meme questions serious thought rather than giving the immediate knee-jerk answers.

I had to give this one thought, especially since I just thought of two other shows that coulda been contenders. (Slings and Arrows/Futurama.)

♥ LoM!
