And when I told him I had been untrue...

Loz Cola
Further to this post, neuralclone thought it would be fun if we compiled a list of songs that probably shouldn't be wedding songs unless the two partners are fully aware of what they're asking for.

Barenaked Ladies - Wrap Your Arms Around Me
The Police - Every Breath You Take
Lyle Lovett - Nobody Knows Me Like My Baby
Billy Idol - White Wedding (actually, I couldn't tell if this was an endorsement or not.)
Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You (or, any version, I guess.)
The Fray - How to Save a Life
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Eddie Fisher - I'm Walking Behind You
Lesley Gore - It's My Party (And I'll Cry if I Want To)
The Crystals - He Hit Me, and it Felt Like a Kiss

Any others?

Britney Spears - Hit me baby one more time?

Negative bonus points for being a crap song.

My friend's uncle had "White Wedding" as his wedding song. He's divorced now, which is probably not a good sign, but I thought it was pretty badass anyway.

Another friend of mine got married this summer and the song they used in their wedding video/photo montage thing was "I Try" by Macy Gray. I thought it was kind of tempting fate in a bad way to use a song with the lyrics we should be together, but we're not.

Oh wow, yes.
13th-Nov-2009 09:12 am (UTC)
But they'd be moronic ironic..!

The Kaiser Chiefs "Every day I love you less and less"

Terrorvision "Day after day"

Hahaha, yes. :p

My flatmate just told me she once saw a news report or reality show or something where the bride walked down the isle to the song "Tragedy", the Steps version, not the BeeGees one. That is a lot of fail.
13th-Nov-2009 01:29 pm (UTC)
Oh your God. That is a tragedy.

I actually think the original Dolly Parton version of "I Will Always Love You Would Be Okay" but no other version is acceptable.

Hmm, the only ones I can think of are ones that obviously would never be played at weddings, anyway. It is probably too late for me to think, period!

Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I have, and all Im taking with me
Good-bye, oh, please don't cry
Cause we both know that Im not
What you need
I will always love you

... hmmmm. I don't think Dolly could make it work either.

Also 'I Will Follow You Into the Dark', whilst in some ways a beautiful sentiment, is not entirely appropriate.
13th-Nov-2009 12:04 pm (UTC)

I'm always astonished when people have that at their weddings.
13th-Nov-2009 01:25 pm (UTC)
As in Leonard Cohen?

Because, yeah.

And from my generation, there were apparently numbers of weddings at which "Yesterday" by the Beatles was played.

I mean, listen to the lyrics, people!
13th-Nov-2009 01:26 pm (UTC)
Also the music --- it's so mournful :(

Band of Gold -- Freda Payne

Masochism Tango -- Tom Lehrer... I'll get my coat.

I don't think anyone could listen to Masochism Tango and not know what they were putting themselves up for, though, could they?

James Blunt: You're Beautiful???

(Which sounds a lot creepier than James was probably going for originally...)
13th-Nov-2009 02:41 pm (UTC)
Yes, I'd agree with that.
13th-Nov-2009 02:31 pm (UTC)
By listing "I'll be watching you" (Police) do you mean "Every breath you take"?

13th-Nov-2009 02:32 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes I do.

How I love LJ's editing feature. Bwah ♥
13th-Nov-2009 02:33 pm (UTC) - For your list, maybe...
Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield
14th-Nov-2009 04:58 pm (UTC) - Re: For your list, maybe...
Or "Hit Me with Your Best Shot." Feisty gal, Pat.
13th-Nov-2009 05:04 pm (UTC)
Extreme - More Than Words. Totally about just wanting the fuck without the romance, and yet sounds so tender.

(I've heard Fairytale in New York used as a wedding song. People are odd sometimes).
13th-Nov-2009 05:48 pm (UTC)
Really??? I thought it was about not just paying lip service to love - you have to show you love as well.

(Fairy Tale of New York?! Yes, in that case, people are *very* odd!)
13th-Nov-2009 06:42 pm (UTC)
Meatloaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light... though it'd be hard to imagine anyone not catching that last line!

13th-Nov-2009 09:15 pm (UTC)
I was just thinking of that one!
