Word Count: 360 words.
Notes: Sam/Gene, based on a quote from A2A 2.08, to be found after the cut.
Summary: Sam tells Gene the truth about where he comes from.
"Why do I always attract the liars and the weirdos?"
Suppose you've known someone for seven years. You know how they drink their coffee, what their poison is at the bar, the hitch of their breath as they're slowly wanked --- and you probably shouldn't know that last one, but you do, like the names of all who work for you and the lyrics to 'Durham Town'.
Suppose you've spent the better part of these seven years in their company, watching them carefully because they need to be saved from themselves more often than not, and you won't declare it readily, but they've a kind of magnetism you've always dispelled as fiction, before. And you've noticed things --- that they sometimes use words in ways that are off the mark, that they seem to think they know stuff that by rights they shouldn't know, that they fret over events before they've occurred.
Suppose you've wondered if this person needs the kind of help you can't give and certainly couldn't afford, even if you sold your house and all your belongings, and that thought crossed your mind just the once, when the pain and horror seemed too great.
And then suppose that this person that you know, that you connect with, that makes your blood pump and your adrenaline surge, that tells you things about yourself you've never had the nerve to admit, suppose they turn around and say something so utterly ridiculous, you think you'll bust your gut from laughing so much.
Until you start to think on it.
And then it all makes terrifying sense. And your world begins to crash around your feet. Until you're stepping on nothing but rack and ruin. Because everything you know is wrong.
"I'm from the future, Gene."
Five simple words with the ability to destroy a heart and betray faith. Five simple words that make no sense, even though you know each syllable as they're said, soft and serious, with hesitation that doesn't hold back enough. Five simple words that have to be a lie, because if they're not, that person that you care about in ways you thought you'd forgotten, is completely and totally insane.
Suppose you've never known anything?
