I can't get next to you...

Note: This post is intended to be jokey, not serious. I thought I'd clear that up first, since I sometimes come across as more aggressive and serious than I ever intend.

People are often telling me I don't write PWP (plot, what plot? AKA 'porn without plot'.)

But I do! All the time! Lots of my stories have very little plot other than sex.

So where am I going wrong?

One regular 'complaint' is that my sex scenes are always character studies. I don't know how this happens. I don't necessarily set out trying to say something about the characters I'm writing, it just kind of happens when I go to set the scene and describe why the characters are doing what they're doing. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong. I rationalise too much.

Occasionally I think it's a style thing, because I tend to vary between pieces from wide third to tight third to relatively strange and yes, perhaps that is a conscious choice, but I do that with all my writing.

Often, I've concluded it's because I don't write 'hot sex'. Sometimes I think I'm a little too careful that I'm not writing about 'throbbing manhoods' and probably that carefulness shows (evidence of veracity: the fic that most people rec was the one I wrote after I'd said 'sod it, I'm going to write anal sex and I'm going to be as crude as Gene would be'. I wrote it under a pseudonym.) I'm also of the vanilla persuasion - dirty talk doesn't really work for me and the only bondage I particularly like is mild, consensual bondage [handcuffs!] (no, really, I am such a prude.) But lots of people have disabused me of that notion by saying things like "hot", and "I'm melting" and all of those other indicators of heat.

So. I don't know what it is. I don't know how I can learn to write good old PWP. Every time I try, I get told things like "this is a fascinating character study" and "the framework of this is great", and I wouldn't say it's frustrating so much as it's perplexing.
