50. Quantum Leap
49. Prison Break
48. Veronica Mars
47. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
46. Sex And The City

45. Farscape
44. Cracker
43. Star Trek
42. Only Fools And Horses
41. Band of Brothers

40. Life On Mars (I would placed this much, much higher. Like, fourth. Just sayin')
39. Monty Python's Flying Circus
38. Curb Your Enthusiasm
37. Star Trek: The Next Generation
36. Father Ted

35. Alias
34. Frasier
33. CSI: Las Vegas
32. Babylon 5
31. Deadwood

30. Dexter (I would have placed this third.)
29. Emergency Room
28. Fawlty Towers
27. Six Feet Under
26. Red Dwarf

25. Futurama (This would have been second.)
24. Twin Peaks
23. The Office UK
22. The Shield
21. Angel

20. Blackadder
19. Scrubs
18. Arrested Development
17. South Park
16. Doctor Who

15. Heroes
14. Firefly
13. Battlestar Galactica
12. Family Guy
11. Seinfeld

10. Spaced (Hell yes, although I would place it first.)
09. The X-Files
08. The Wire
07. Friends
06. 24

05. Lost
04. The West Wing
03. The Sopranos
02. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
01. The Simpsons (I love it, but I'd place it about fifth. You can't deny it's brilliant, but it's not better than Futurama as a television show of its genre.)

I don't agree with any of the proclamations of best episode of these series apart from Buffy. As xwingace pointed out, 1.06 is nowhere near the best Life on Mars episode in terms of plot, suspense, or even oneliners. I've always liked it more than most other LoM fans, but it's pale in comparison to 1.04, 1.05 and 1.07 just on the technical details. (And pale in comparison to 2.02 and 2.07 when it comes to fan service, 2.05 when it comes to attempting something new.)

Even Matt and Ash concede it's not them at their best (and there were so many good reasons for that - the trouble they went through with that episode makes me wince every time I think of it.) The only reason LoM gets relegated to fourth is because of my problems with the ending --- and even then, sometimes I think that's a bonus. I know I bang on about this a lot, but not an ounce of my love for Life on Mars is ironic. I truly do think a lot of it was literature on the screen. I think the entire series could have been - and that, that is why I get so bitchy about it. It promised so much, delivered a lot - it was brilliant.

And I freaking love Futurama's "Godfellas", but it's one of about five episodes that constantly rotate in and out of my favourites list. I think "The Farnsworth Parabox" is the best in the context of the series, and "Amazon Women in the Mood" is the one I'd show to someone who'd never seen the show before. The best thing about Futurama is that I can rewatch it endlessly and never get sick of it - there's always something else to notice or enjoy.

Also, whilst 1.05 of Spaced is truly wonderful, my favourite has to be 2.05, followed by 1.05, followed by 2.01. I really do think Spaced is the best television show ever made. It's certainly the best sitcom. Every episode is a delight, it's shot brilliantly, with engaging characters. It's utterly charming and true. Even with its insanity, at its essential base, it's remarkably insightful about life. And I have rewatched it so many times now, yet it never, ever gets old. Ever.

This list was really difficult for me, because, whilst I largely agree with it, I also don't. I think some of the shows were brilliant at one time, or within their specific areas, and yet, I would never include them because of their sum total.
