Been An Angel All Year...

Title: Been An Angel All Year
Fandom: Life on Mars
Rating: PG
Word Count: 600 words
Notes: Sam/Annie. Matthew Graham wrote LoM Christmas Fic. This is a follow-on from that, so spoilers - and for 2.08 too. Title from ‘Santa Baby’.

Sam thought he knew a lot of things.

There were lots of things he did know; routine procedures and how many licorice allsorts he could get down the corner shop for 56 p. His height down to the millimeter, because Sam preferred metric and had given up on imperial entirely in his first year of being on the Force.

And his feelings for Annie. He knew them.

At first they had been diaphanous, intangible, confusing. But now he knew. The best description was a four letter word he had used once before and was terrified to use once again.

There was a flurry of activity around him. Sam barely registered it. Tints and shades whirled by in Sam’s peripheral vision, a technicolour of movement and action. It was slow motion and out of focus; dimmed down and insignificant. All that mattered to Sam in that moment was the still figure splayed on the ground.

She lay there, pale, a crisp white imitation of the woman he knew. Blood pooled from the gunshot wound resting just below her breastbone, converging with the distinct spatter pattern arrayed against concrete. Her eyes were closed. Sam didn’t know why, but that --- that almost lessened the numbing pain.

Not half an hour before she’d been offering him protection and now all she offered him was a twisting knot in the pit of his stomach, acidic bile at the back of his throat.

Sam crumpled to his knees. The harsh sting of impending tears seared the back of his eyes and Sam knelt by Annie’s body, too afraid to touch her, hands outstretched to do just that. It wasn’t just Annie that was dead, it was Sam’s hopes and dreams. He had returned to 1973 for a future, but now 1974 loomed around the corner, barren and unbearable. His confidante, his sounding board, his intuitive, intelligent, beautiful Annie with full red lips and bright, mischievous eyes --- dead.

Life was cruel. Life was the cruelest bastard Sam had ever come into contact with.

There must have been noise around him, voices chattering, Gene and the others barking orders, but Sam couldn’t hear it, didn’t want to hear it. Sound would break him, crack him open, spill his contents for all to see.

There was a hand placed on his shoulder. Gene’s voice cut through the cacophony of silence, the timbre uncharacteristically gentle.

“Sam?”

“Annie,” Sam responded, softly. His throat was constricted and would only let a harsh rasp out.

Tears were falling thick and fast, staining his cheeks and leaving salt on his lips.

“Why’s he crying, Guv?” another voice questioned. Sam noted the anxiety in the tone, but not who spoke the words.

“I dunno,” Gene replied.

Sam continued staring, every muscle in his body slack and weighted.

“Annie,” he repeated again.

Sam didn’t believe it when a pale, crisp white imitation of a hand lifted from Annie’s hip and came to rest against the concrete. He stopped breathing when the other joined it and they both started pushing. He vomited when Annie’s upper body rose upright and Annie stared at him, quietly inquisitive.

“Sam?”

“I thought you were dead,” Sam gasped. “I thought I’d lost you.”

Annie raised an eyebrow, sweeping an action-ravaged fringe out of her eyes.

“I can’t die, Sam,” Annie said, unfalteringly matter-of-fact. “None of us can. Not again. We’re already dead. I thought you knew that? I thought you’d accepted that? You said you’d stay forever, and forever you’ll stay.”

Sam thought he knew a lot of things.

There were lots of things he did not know.
