Last week, I fell in love with Maria. I thought, "right on, you have finally come into your own." And then this week? Oh my God. I was genuinely shocked. She is freaking evil. Just evil. Pure, unmitigated evil. So much worse than Dexter. I love how complex she is.
And that's the whole show, really. Sustaining plots, sure, but the characters are stunning. Not quite like characters you've ever seen before. Oh, they're archetypal - what is Dexter's core really but a Vampire with a Soul? But they're that much more than that too. Even Masuka has layers. That's some fine writing. Then there's the acting - Michael C. Hall is so very believable and Julie Benz is lovely. It's just all well done. Beautifully shot. Great sound. Fantastic television.
I really am on Dexter's side. I kind of knew that from the very first sentence of the first episode, but still, I do wonder what that says about me. About all of us, really, since I doubt there is anyone who watches the show hoping for Dexter to get locked up. I feel very real fear for him.
