Connecting with The Powers That Be...

Life on Mars is the first fandom I've been in which has a really tight-knit feel to it, where fans, writers and actors alike mingle in the fan domain. I know that this exists for other fandoms, has even existed in the past for a couple of my others, but this is the only time I've really seen it in action. Since I have no cash and live all the way over here in Adelaide, I've never been to a con (and to be honest, I'm not sure I'd be great in that environment - having to meet people and attempt to be all winsome and everything.)

It's a double-edged sword that we are so closely connected in a way, because I love it - I do. I love reading Dean Andrews' posts and he's managed to convince me to give more attention to his character just by virtue of being a presence in the Life on Mars fandom. I love knowing that Matthew and Ashley (and possibly Tony, and also Chris Chibnall) are there lurking, amusing themselves with far-flung theories. Also, when they were posting, they were hilarious.

At the same time, I feel a little scared to do the fannish things I do (which in my case usually involves me being silly.) Obviously, I try not to let it affect me too much, after all, I am one of many fans, so it's not really like I've got a great big beacon over my head - but I have this notion that there should be distance between The Powers That Be and the fans, so that the fans can do what they do, and TPTB can do what they do.

But we're all just people, right? This is, in a way, a false notion. If the writers and actors choose to spend time with the fans, I should just be happy - they can handle anything I do with the appropriate sense of humour, I think. If they couldn't, they wouldn't engage with us. Also - these are people who are fans themselves.

I don't know. On the one hand, it's an absolute "yay". Really, just "YAY". And on the other it's --- I guess it's vanity. Because I'm well aware that I am/come off as a complete ditz, and usually I'm okay with that, but I don't want the awesome people I admire seeing just how prattish I can be.
