What is this program on my screen? Because it sure as hell isn't the Battlestar Galactica I used to watch. What was once full of interesting, intelligent and engaging characters is now full of flat, boring idiots. Where is Starbuck? Why did they kill her off and replace her with a long-haired, weak-willed substitute? For a while I was hopeful, but by the end of 3.02 I was positively disgusted. Roslin is only a shadow of her former, arse-kicking self. I pretty much hate what they have done to Bill Adama and if he doesn't prove himself as the awesome character I know he is soon, I will find some method of revenge. Even the cylons, those who heretofore made me think and kept me interested, bored the hell out of me - Brother Cavil notwithstanding (and even he grated on my nerves after a while).
I have absolutely no idea what the writers were thinking when they increased Ellen Tigh's role in the series. Actually - not just Ellen, but Saul too. He is a weak man. He is a weak character. He is not worthy of that much attention. Similarly, there was far too much attention placed on the Leoben/Starbuck storyline, which dragged, and dragged. And I say this as a Callum Keith Rennie fan, remember. It was just so lifeless.
One of the things I always adored about BsG was its subtlety and ambiguity. These have now disappeared. They used such a foolishly obvious technique for showing that Lee had 'gone soft', yet for some reason felt the need to repeat it ad nauseum. I actually don't think it matters that he's gained weight, other than the fact they keep shoving it down my throat that it does, though I do think that the make-up around his face was placed oddly. Another painfully obvious example of mistrusting the viewers was the slowing down of the camera on our first suicide bomber, as if highlighting "oh, such precious life, something terrible is going to happen". It was that which a hack might use. How about those brilliant lines about the demise of Tigh's eye? - I do not think that could have possibly been any more heavy-handed. Kara eating the meat after killing one the Leobens and patting the serviette to her mouth is another example of that which leapt out at me, as if bathed in garish colour.
Is this supposed to be farcical? I honestly cannot tell. Sometimes I think it is - and then there's this deadly serious gaze, and I'm lost. Are they going for comedy? Or is this serious social commentary poorly executed? People blowing themselves up in public places is bad! OH, REALLY? I HAD NO IDEA. Oppression is bad! DEARY ME, I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED. Where once they raised questions, now they lecture, to the very people who would already agree with their points of view.
These episodes went on forever. I thought they were never going to stop. I kept looking at the timer, hoping it was going to stop soon. I should not be feeling like this!
I will keep watching. Several actors I like and admire are in it. I only hope that it improves, and soon, or I'll just be torturing myself every week. Because that? Was not entertaining. Not remotely thought-provoking, other than "they should have quit a long time ago."
Please remember, this show is called Battlestar Galactica. I want to watch Battlestar Galactica.
