It was dark in the closet. Fraser’s hand hovered by the doorframe but Ray grabbed hold, pulling it away from the switch.
“You don’t want the light on, Ray?”
“I think that would detract from the whole hiding aspect of us being in a closet, Benny.”
Fraser nodded. Of course, Ray couldn’t see as such. He could probably sense it, though. They were very close.
“If you don’t mind me asking, Ray-”
“No, go ahead.”
“-What are we doing hiding in a closet?”
“Welsh is gonna kill me dead if I don’t give him a report of our last case, Benny.”
“And?”
“And I don’t have one, do I?”
“Why not, Ray?”
“I spent the past forever chasing up leads for our next case, Benny, that’s why.”
“I fail to see how hiding in a closet is going to result in a complete report.”
“It’s not.”
“Well, why don’t we just go and explain the situation to Lieutenant Welsh? I’m sure he’d understand if you only approached him as a rational adult.”
“You’re assuming I’m a rational adult, Benny. That’s a tricky thing to assume.”
“I’m not assuming anything, Ray.”
Fraser’s hand landed on Ray’s chest. He could hear the steady thumping of Ray’s heart, rapid and forceful.
“So you don’t think I’m a rational adult?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Then what?”
“I think you’re detracting from the situation at hand, Ray.”
“I am not.”
“Ray, we’re both grown men, hiding in a closet. We’re not only grown men, we’re police officers - though granted I do not currently hold jurisdiction in most domains -”
“Benny, I know what we are.”
“Then why won’t you go and face up to your responsibilities? I am sure the consequences will be minimal.”
“Benny?”
“Yes, Ray?”
“Has it ever occurred to you that this hiding in a closet could be to both of our advantages?”
“I’m not sure I follow your meaning, Ray.”
Fraser stood stock still as Ray leaned into him and placed warm lips against his own. He moved forward as Ray opened his mouth, warm and inviting. The kiss was slow and deliberate. They pulled apart. Having adjusted to the light, Fraser could see Ray’s features, his eyes glittering enigmatically.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“You really need to warn me when you’re coming up with excuses, Ray. I’m not very good at detecting differing levels of intention.”
“Okay, Benny. What do you want me to say next time?”
“How about ‘we’re not strictly hiding in the closet, we’re here to – ah’…”
“Make out?”
“If you like, Ray.”
“I like that very much.”
Fraser decided he also liked it very much, especially when Ray’s hands slid up his back and his tongue brushed over his teeth. He could get used to spending time in dark closets.
