Teacher Icon

One of the suckier aspects of teaching up here is having to clean your own classroom. Not so bad when you're teaching the older students - nag enough and they'll tidy after themselves. Junior Primary, though? Five year olds are not known for their ability to a) eat without crumbs, b) pack anything away properly [and believe me, I have been working on packing up procedures], c) refrain from defacing tables with pencils and felt tip pens. And so, part of my daily ritual is vacuuming, wiping, collecting, sorting, packing. And God forbid should we do visual arts, like we did today.

I've always said that cleaners are the unsung heroes of the school system. I now believe that even more.
