Tastes like purple, purple tastes good...

Weird story here... years ago now, some of you may remember, I had to come up with a website for one of my Screen Studies classes. Now, it was a commercial website for a soft drink called Fantasta (we had to come up with a company, proposal, etc.) The drink was purple and had a purple hippo as its mascot. I came up with the slogan "Tastes like purple, purple tastes good!" I was amused by it. This was before I had ever watched Futurama. The other day I was watching an episode of the aforementioned show (The Why of Fry), and suddenly Fry asks "Huh. Did everything just taste purple for a second?" Then in another episode I'm sure he says something like "ugh! tastes like purple!' So it's a long-running Futurama joke.

How is that possible? It's just so bizarre. Maybe I picked it up from somewhere, or someone said it online - but I don't remember that. I remember thinking how funny it would be to say a colour tasted like something. And then to further proclaim that this something was good. Just because. Ohh, ohhh, research shows me that one reason why it might be "tasting purple" is a reference to "Roswell That Ends Well" when the red and blue combine (Fry asks "does something smell blue?") so that lends even more credence to me coming up with this independantly. I have the same creative insanity as the Futurama writers one assumes. It's... odd.

And just for you - Collapse )
