Mail call...
11th-Nov-2012 02:40 pm
Futurama Cylon

The house behind me has the same number as me, but is number+A.

My neighbours just came round to tell me that they've been receiving some of my mail (not all of it, because I got the gas bill the other day, haaaah. Odd that a bill would make it to me. I did wonder why I didn't get an update from World Vision, though.) They've called by a couple times, but I've always been at work. They knew I was home this time because I was listening to music loudly enough (which also meant I almost didn't answer the door.)

Getting this mail made me realise that the postal service hasn't been as lackadaisical as I assumed (no. just ridiculously unable to tell that if there's no letter, it goes in the mailbox that has no letter.)

There's a whole stack of thank yous I owe people. Thanks so much to jillwise, thesmallhobbit, basaltgrrl and solanpolarn. Reading your letters & cards and seeing your pictures just then was wonderful ♥. I'll see if I can get something in the mail for you all --- and sorry to anyone else I owe, the last month has been craziness, but I am planning on sending something!

... now how do I solve the stupid mail problem? Ugh. Maybe I'll just look in number+A's mailbox as well as mine and hope they continue to pop round if they get to it before me? I haven't had any of theirs, far as I can make out, though I do get a shit-tonne of mail from previous owners of this house.

I'm glad you got it!! That used to happen to me occasionally at my parents' house, as they live at 6 Fairlane Road, but mail was occasionally delivered to 6 Fairlane Cresent (we could never get a taxi either, they always went to the crescent).

Good luck sorting out the post situation! If your postal service is anything like Canada Post here in Canada, you may have your work cut out for you.....

So annoying!

I'm glad your mail mystery is solved, even if the problem isn't. Is there any chance you can waylay your postie? No, that's unrealistic, isn't it, given your work schedule. Maybe a Notice to Postal Delivery Person posted prominently on your front door, to draw the mix-up to their attention? I doubt they'd mind, as long as it's politely worded.

And... oh damn. I meant to sign up to send you a housewarming letter, but missed out. And now your house is all warm, I suppose? Still, if you're hankering for a really cheesy RCMP postcard, or one with bears or moose, or both, I am your woman.

Hee, thank you for the offer.

Couldn't you maybe just come to an agreement with your neighbours at +A that if either one of you receives mail for the other you'll just repost it in the relevant mailbox? That would seem to be the simplest solution.

We've had an annoying spate of stuff being mis-delivered too; our house number is 2, but we frequently find things being delivered either to number 1 or number 21. The logic of this (if there is any) escapes us completely.

I second this suggestion! I live at Flat 5 at House Name on Street Name, and frequently get post for 5 Street Name or for Flat 5 Different House Name among other things. It is quite annoying because I constantly worry that some of my mail will be going elsewhere an possibly nobody bothers to either put it through our letter box or give it back to the postie. I usually make sure to do either of those, when mail for other places arrive.

Yep, we did that!

AGGHHHH You know what, I have a letter I wrote you sat on my desk, and it's been there ever since you posted the first mail call entry XD I've just been so busy I haven't managed to get it to you yet.

But I will, when I can get down the post office! It'll be horribly out of date, but it'll get there eventually!!!

Hee, thank you <3

Contact the postal service and point out the mistake. I have that kind of problem because my address has an E for east and there is another house with the same number plus a W for west about a mile down the road. Whenever we get a new or substitute postal carrier, there tend to be mix-ups, and whenever the letter carrier isn't paying attention, we get our next door neighbor's mail. A wake-up call or e-mail usually helps with postal carrier attentiveness for a while.

That might help with the previous occupant stuff too. Or not. 12 years on, we still get a few addressed to the previous occupant. I stopped her catalogs with phone calls, but a couple of organizations she supported with donations haven't given up yet.

And hopefully the folks in +A have figured out who you are now and won't assume they are getting a prior occupants mail. Is it possible for them to stick the mail in your box or does it take a key or something? Sounds like not, if you are able to look in their box. . . just agree to redeliver mix-ups?

Done and done. And I mean done.

So you still haven't received my card?

Hi <3 No, I haven't sorry!

I am pleased to hear the card arrived! I was beginning to worry it had got lost en route. As I mentioned above I have similar issues; or to be precise I know that other people on my road have similar issues because I keep getting their mail. Actually I do know that it is sometimes a problem for me to, because when I moved in and tried to get a phone line and broadband BT for reasons that possibly make sense to them put my address in as 5 My Street instead of Flat 5, My House, My Street. I only found this out after they had tried to deliver my broadband hub to the other address and claimed that I hadn't been home to take delivery despite the fact that I had been at home for the entire delivery window they had specified. It was very upsetting, and then after all the hassle and having to take a day off work with nothing to show for it, the second time around they were fine with delivering it to my work address! Grr! Hope your mail trouble get sorted, or that you at least can work out a redelivery arrangement with your neighbour.

Oh man, that is the worst, sorry that happened to you :(

Thank you!

Our mail situation isn't as bad as yours, but it's still kind of confusing. We live on the second floor of a house, and our landlady told us our mailbox was on the side of the house. Apparently the post office didn't get the memo, though, even if I specifically told them, because we get mail in both the front and side mailboxes. Also, no one else lives there, but we still get mail for other people, who presumably lived there at one point.
