Gene is the ridiculously popular kid who is failing most of his classes, Sam is considered both a freak and a geek thanks to his leather-jacket-wearing and off the wall quoting combined with straight As. Sam gets himself into masses of trouble by picking a fight with unjust science teacher Frank Rathbone, necessitating cruel and unusual punishment from Head Mistress Phyllis Dobbs. She wants him to work as Gene's tutor. Sam and Gene? Fight all the time, and not just verbally. But, for some reason, Sam doesn’t shop Gene. Maybe it’s because Gene’s little brother Stu begs him not to. After that, things are slightly smoother. The boys realise they have some things in common and begrudgingly begin to like one another’s company. Sam soon discovers that Gene has the intelligence to ace his subjects, but none of the application, and most of that is because he’s knackered from secretly working two jobs on top of school. Gene has to provide for his family. Mumblety-mumble happens (Gene’s dad and flying fists? Stu gets caught smoking weed?) and Stu decides to run away. Sam and Gene bond even further over looking for Stu. Stu is safe, because I am all for happy endings. Inevitably, sexiness occurs between Sam and Gene, but not before one final miscommunication that ramps up the drama, oh noes.
