Life on Mars (Sam & Gene are Partners)
This entire post is in capslock. You have been warned.

READ IT. READ IT NOW. IT IS SO MUCH BETTER IN SO MANY WAYS TO WHAT WAS AIRED. FOR SERIOUS.

It makes more sense. It addresses the Morgan problem. It's still horrible with the whole Ruth thing, but there's far more suggestion that Sam didn't commit suicide, but instead had some kind of interdimensional travel. (It's not conclusive by any means, but it is more suggestive.) You get far more of a sense that Sam really hates 2006, and can see why.

And? And? As much as I love the aired final minutes of LoM, the shooting script is actually better. BECAUSE AFTER THE REQUISITE SAM/ANNIE KISS? THE ONLY TWO CHARACTERS WHO DRIVE INTO THE SUNSET ARE SAM AND GENE.

Fuck. Fuck.

I love the ensemble, do not get me wrong. I have always adored Annie, and Chris and Ray, and it does seem right that they should go off into the sunset together --- but SAM AND GENE, you guys. Matthew's original intention, despite all the "you know how I feel" with Annie, was that Sam belonged with Gene. Riding into the sunset WITH GENE AND GENE ALONE.

I cannot process this right now. All I can say is? I think I finally forgive 2.08.

Eh, I figured anyone who wanted a link was probably on LI73/mars_daily. I have a one track mind!

So do I (normally). It's just my documentation tic kicking in.

Isn't it wonderful?

I just wish... that the flirtation scene had been with Gene.

GENE
I remember this bloke turning up at our station looking like an escapee from the local loony bin. And he had all these funny ideas about policing.

SAM
I know him. Lithe, good-looking bloke. Pretty ripped.

GENE
Only thing ripped about him was his tattered grip on reality. Anyway, he ended up in "A" Division, screaming about furniture. "This is a door! Where's my desk! Chair!"

SAM
He sounds like a grade-A nutter. How’d you handle him?

GENE
Oh, the usual. I slammed him up against my filing cabinet and gave him the full weight of my personal authority. (he looks at SAM, his eyes narrowed) I stared him at him 'til he backed down. He wasn't half a skinny little tosser ...

SAM
God, he sounds bloody gorgeous.

GENE
Next to the Gene Genie? Not a chance.

That was actually totally perfect and I can see it, and yes, I agree, how amazing would that have been?

*bookmarks for reading* I never thought there'd be LoM news ever again.

I never thought we'd get something like this. We got the shooting script for 1.01 a few years ago, and I never paid much attention, but I think we got 1.04 a while back too. But not 2.08.

I am completely fantasising that some of - all? - the other shooting scripts may appear over time.

*begs the gods of synchronised policing* Oh please. Oh, please...

Sam running towards something that seemed real? Sam trying to get in some other universe where there were people who needed him?

Because I could live with the Ruth thing if it was that - if he thought they were real. It's still horribly hard on Ruth, but it's like a justifiable harm if he's running towards something real. Like if it's someone you love being put through the pain of losing you, or some people you love being left to die, then it makes sense to basically go "Sorry" and go save them. It doesn't seem as callous as "I will abandon my loving mother for happy fantasy land". And it has less of the creepy pro-suicide vibe (there's something deeply unsettling about the whole "And then the lonely depressed man jumped off a building and died, and went to a happy fantasy land where everything was perfect").

Well, it's not quite that, but there's more bleed-through of the '73 world into the 2006 one. It does make Sam's actions more understandable.

If I could just handwave it as "Sam thought there was a good chance it was real" it'd sit much more easily with me.

Well, have you read through the script yet? Sam is clearly having repeated dreams about the team in 2006. He thinks he can smell Annie's "Charlie" cologne when he's talking to Morgan in the hspital. And just before Sam jumps, he hears Annie on his iPod (in fact, she's an "option" on the menu!)... and then he sees her on a television screen, screaming for him to come back.

This is much, MUCH more "real" than anything we were shown in the aired episode.

It's wonderful to see a person reconcile with a person's loved ones.

:P I'm sure it is.

Yes, I agree.

It's weird that the work they put into it went the wrong way. (A2A's influence?)

The shooting script reads as hugely overlong to me. So, they probably felt that extensive slash and burn was necessary. And given how different it is from the aired episode, we're probably looking at multiple and possibly panicky rewrites. Group rewrites. Under time pressure.

Interestingly, they actually *softened* Gene a little bit in his oh-look-Hunt's-such-a-thug behaviours. This script has Gene intimidating Croucher's widow and torturing Sykes by sellotaping a lit light bulb to the back of his hand. The first is arguably a length trim (and it wasn't much of a loss), but the second had to be deliberate, since the filmed interrogation scene has Gene hitting Sykes in the mouth and then Ray pulling at Sykes's bleeding mouth instead... so that it was Ray who performed the actual coup de grace. Did they feel that the hero of the upcoming A2A shouldn't be shown as quite that brutal? Or did they not want to leave us with that grim an impression of Gene in the final episode of LoM?

All I can say is, I'm glad they lost the "swanny" whistle sound effect at the beginning ;-)

in 2:08 itself, there's a truly chilling moment when Sam stares through the window at the team and tells them they're all in his head.

Ah, the one where Sam's watching them through the blinds, his face is shadowed by a series of dark lines, and his eyes are narrowed and quite frankly rather evil-looking.

Yes, he's definitely frightening at that moment. Inspired at least one evil!Sam icon that I know of :-D
