I suspect that professional hairstylists work with hair dye companies --- asking them to release products that would never actually turn light brown hair blonde, and woe betide the schmuck who'd believe the lies.

This post brought to you by the question: guess who's currently sporting bright fucking orange hair?

You were attempting to dye your hair blonde?

Which, it turns out, is guaranteed FAIL every time.

Pretty much. It's the one colour-in-a-box that should be totally avoided unless your hair is really sort of blonde anyway and you're just warming it up or your hair is totally grey. The peroxide is so unpredictable. It's why the hairstylist usually foils your hair.

You're pretty much going to have to go to a professional to get it sorted out -- eeeevil peroxide -- or over-dye it with a medium brown and then be warned that where the peroxide really took you'll probably end up with some interesting highlights. A box of colour stripper can be your friend, just don't leave it on too long.

I dyed a lot of mates' hair back at uni.

I've certainly learnt my lesson. I have an appointment booked for tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice, here. I usually just do a 6 week red rinse, for fun, but this time, on a REALLY STUPID whim, I thought 'why not?'

There's a reason people like me are worried about change, goddammit.

The good news is that a trained professional should be able to sort you out fast and don't feel embarrassed about it at all, hairstylists see it all the time as you're no where near the first woman to see a box of dye and think "fuck it, why not?"

... Just sings songs in your head while s/he gives you the inevitable lecture on peroxide. *g*

Ooops. Well, at least it's not green (like Roger Taylor managed a couple of decades ago...)

I managed to do exactly the same thing a few years ago - except I'd henna'd my hair previously and the bleach pretty much stripped my natural hair colour bare. So I ended up with dark orange tips, fading to a mid-orange half-way up and white at the roots.

I waited a weekend, went in to work on the Tuesday after the bank holiday and promptly dyed it back to dark brown. Never again.

Eep...

I hadn't any colour in my hair, so I assumed it would go the colour it was meant to... but no. I have just enough natural red in my brown hair that it's, er... strawberry blonde/orange/HIDEOUS.

Yikes! Good luck getting it sorted quickly!

Thank you, Miri ♥

follow up with a toner?

9th-Jul-2010 04:14 am (UTC)
The internet told me to go to a professional, so that's what I'm doing.

Oh honey! *hugs* It will grow out. Eventually.

♥ You're evil, you know that, right?

I wish I could hook you up with Sebastian. If there's a way to get you blonde, he'll do it.

Well, at least you know you'll hold your students' attention...

My vet has medium brown hair about your shade and used a plain old henna rinse that came out really beautiful mahogany.

I never had the nerve to use a real dye, so when I was your age I tried a 'sun-lightener' and found myself with a kind of straw-texture, sticky, not-quite-lemon color.

It grows out...
9th-Jul-2010 04:13 am (UTC)
I'm getting it seen to by a professional tomorrow. *sigh* And yeah, it will grow out... eventually.

The whole experience sounds absolutely mortifying :-(

Can you afford to go to a colourist and get it fixed professionally? Or try another home dye to darken it again?

If it helps any, there's not a woman on this thread who hasn't had something similar happen to her. My hair once turned a shade of red that I swear has never before been seen in nature.

I have an appointment for tomorrow morning, but, oh man, humiliation squick ahoy. Real life this time, no less.

♥ Thank you!

(Also? Your icon? I have enough self-deprecation left in me that I SQUEAKED with hilarity because of how apt it is.)

Hee! I'm just a bit relieved to hear you say so. I actually uploaded the Beaker icon last week but hadn't found the right opportunity to use it. Still not sure this is it :-P but I thought you might appreciate it under the circumstances.

(Also, this is pretty much how I looked at the age of sixteen when the Unspeakable Incident occurred.)

awww, that sucks. Maybe try another dye over the top to dim the orange?
