Day 02 (a show that you wish more people were watching): You Have Been Watching
Maybe everyone is watching it, but don't mention it because it's a panel show. Either way, I think more people should enjoy this for what it is; half an hour of snarky joy. Charlie Brooker is a delight, there's an interesting cross-section of shows explored, and the guests are often awesome.

(Once upon a time, this might have said The United States of Tara, but I haven't really liked this season at all, and have missed the last three episodes as a consequence.)

I've only watched a bit of one episode of this, and was sufficiently annoyed by the choice of panellists (some male comedians, and a woman who was pretty but not funny -- a combination that I am getting so sick of seeing) that I haven't watched it since.

I'm beginning to really dislike the competitive nature of comedy in panel shows. :(

With the obvious exception of The Bubble, which is the only panel show I've ever watched with a completely even gender balance in its guests, You Have Been Watching is my favourite panel show in terms of the way it treats its female panellists. I think Brooker probably has a hand in choosing the guests; they're generally intelligent, insightful people, and the women never feel token to me. If you're so inclined, I'd definitely advise you to give it another go!

Sorry for barging in on your comment, but the 'pretty but not funny' criticism of women in comedy is one that really troubles me, because it contributes to a general assumption that often leads to pretty women being dismissed even when they are funny. It may be valid in this case (I don't know which episode you saw, after all), but I still think it's something that could stand to be said less often. Also, You Have Been Watching is well worth watching, so it makes me sad to see it dismissed because of something it actually does extremely well on compared to, say, QI.

I have a lot of 'word' for this comment.

So. Much. Word.

I adore QI but the gender disparity on that show is troubling. And I hated the "Girls and Boys" episode from this past season. Truly awful stuff. It was too bad because it was one of the only times(possibly the only time?) that there were two female panelists on the show.

I totally don't think women in comedy are pretty but not funny (and definitely didn't say that in my original comment!). I do think there's a tendency on some panel shows to pick women who are better known for being pretty instead of funny (The Big Fat Quiz of the Year is the worst offender, and I'm very glad it's only on once a year).

If you haven't seen it already, Jo Brand's article on this subject is worth reading:

And thanks for the reply -- maybe I'll give it another try some time. Clearly I was very unlucky with the 10 minutes I saw... :)

TBFQ definitely does fail in that regard, although I was very fond of Claudia Winkleman last year. (I think she's very slyly hilarious. The sad thing is, a lot of misogynistic males people probably think they're laughing at her and haven't realised it's her shtick.)

My issue with the 'pretty but not funny' comment is that it opens up the idea that pretty people can't be funny, and that's obviously not true. It seems to me that male comedians get away with a lot more than female comedians, and because there are so many more of them, they're ever-present too.

But You Have Been Watching generally has some very cool guests, both male and female.

I really haven't noticed many women who aren't funny on panel shows, I have to admit. I usually find all guests excellent, especially the women. I can understand it not being your thing, but that's not the criticism I'd level its way, personally.

I like panel shows, what can I say? Competition sometimes brings comedy gold.

See above-mentioned link for a good explanation of why panel shows don't necessarily serve female comedians well.

And I did start off my original comment by saying I'd only seen a bit of one episode, which surely suggests that my opinion on this show is founded on almost nothing. :D

This is where I'm inclined to say the women should fight back!

I find that I don't really talk about it in my LJ(I mentioned it when I did this meme and that's about it) because I generally react to others' posts about it.

It's such a fantastic show!

I am inclined to do the same thing, hah.

:D Yay, it is, I agree!

Was it the rerun of the Kids' tv special? Because, barring the David Mitchell episodes, that is the BEST.
