100 Unwritten Fics #008

Redzene
I have never and will never write the fic idea I sometimes have in which Phineas and Ferb reach the age of consent, decide they're not particularly brotherly, are in fact in love with one another, and should embark upon romance (with extra gadgets!)

Reason(s) for not having written: Anyone who has seen the show can come up with at least five reasons why this idea is appalling.

Thank you for that.

YOU READ IT. YOU CAN'T UNREAD IT!
5th-Jun-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
But I'll be trying damn hard!
5th-Jun-2012 10:56 am (UTC)

I too must add my thanks.

No love for the incestuous Phineas and Ferb fic? Really? I am shocked.
5th-Jun-2012 07:46 pm (UTC)

Incestuous? They're not actually brothers by blood.
5th-Jun-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
I never really understood the "It only counts when they're genetically related" logic, especially when it comes to same-gender pairings. I mean male-female pairings, there's at least the hypothetical possibility of inbreeding, but if they're both the same gender, wouldn't the only issue be that they're family in the social and psychological sense? Two brothers who are raised together, regardless of whether they're blood relatives or not aren't going to have inbred children, but are likely to suffer the effects of introducing sex into a family relationship.

Incest is my only concrete squick and to me they're brothers if they're raised as brothers... I was just playing with Loz as she was playing with me due to her knowing how strong my incest aversion is.
5th-Jun-2012 08:11 pm (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. I'm definitely with you on the "They're brothers if they're raised as brothers" thing.

I was genuinely curious as to why "They're not genetically related" is the line for many people, even when it doesn't seem like it would make any difference, but obviously you wouldn't have the answer.
5th-Jun-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)

Unfortunately I wouldn't, as I also struggle with slash between characters where one is obviously a "father figure" to the other one. Yeah, it's that strong an aversion.

Actually, I think my personal aversion is more strongly based on the social connections, as I have some empathy for cases that have come to light where siblings who were not raised together have ended up in a relationship after meeting as adults.

I honestly don't care if anyone else wants to write it or read it, I'm just not going to.

I think we've got a pretty similar viewpoint on this. I'm also more put off by "Raised as family" than "Genetically family". I'm not exactly comfortable with genetically-family-raised-apart pairings, but I have more sympathy. And, aside from some "I don't understand why they like it" curiosity and the occasional "Why is this story I thought I'd like turning into incest?" moment of frustration (mostly with non-fannish works), I don't care about other people's tastes and preferences.

(I actually sometimes read incest stories when it's meant to be horrible and damaging and traumatic, but can't stand it when it's presented as positive or happy or a thing the readers are supposed to ship or anything like that. I think it's because I'm less squicked by the incest than anything that feels like it's trying to justify or condone incest, even when the writers aren't actually trying to justify it.)
5th-Jun-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)

Apart from the reasons expressed above, I also can't read it because no writer, no matter how talented they are, is ever going to convince me that it's "hot" because it just makes me shudder.

Back in my uni days I volunteered in women's shelters and ran across too many horrific RL incidences of it to ever find it sexy.

But then I don't find the notion of "taboos" particularly sexy either in and of themselves, which I do think is part of the allure for some of the readers, I just like what I like.
5th-Jun-2012 08:41 pm (UTC)
I used to volunteer at a shelter for abused children. (I always have to suppress a shudder when I hear "But they're not blood relatives!" because so many abusive stepfathers used precisely that excuse.)

And yeah, taboos aren't a big thrill for me in of themselves.

Sometimes I do not get it, either. Like, I am such a 'ykinmkato' person, but I am continually squinting at some fandoms and going... 'really?' But I do this for many reasons, to be fair. There are a couple of popular incest ships where I think "but that is a sign of being a good sibling." Never mind that I kind of hate people who do that about people who say "but that is a sign of being a good friend" to invalidate a ship.

I am still far more on the side of 'no incest, please', and certainly not okay with real life instances of deliberate abuse, but I think my brain has spent enough time on the internet now that it's decided I don't have that squick anymore and will throw incesty plot bunnies at me whenever it thinks I need a punch in the head.

But I do this for many reasons, to be fair. There are a couple of popular incest ships where I think "but that is a sign of being a good sibling."

I totally do that! There have been a couple of non-fannish works where I got really into the story and been all "I totally love the sibling relationship! They're all close and protective and affection and...no, please don't go that way! Not the incest!" So I don't spot it even when writers are setting it up, unless they're deliberately making it creepy, because when it's siblings, the whole "love and affection=boning" thing just doesn't register.

It's funny, a lot of other things that used to squick me have been worn down by the 'net but this one sticks.
5th-Jun-2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
:p

For a second there, I was totally going to bring out my "we both know that's irrelevant" card, but Wolfy got there before me.

(I am constantly fighting against this in how I slash Shawn/Gus, who weren't actually raised as brothers, or, for the most part, identify as brothers, let alone P & F!)
6th-Jun-2012 02:14 am (UTC)

Shawn/Gus doesn't trigger my incest squick but I do read them just as BFFs.
5th-Jun-2012 11:42 am (UTC)
This is the one fic so far I'm glad you haven't written.
5th-Jun-2012 11:45 am (UTC)
You're all such cowards. :D :D

Haha, yeah. My brain's such a jerk.
5th-Jun-2012 12:27 pm (UTC)
Clearly I'm a horrible, horrible person, 'cause I kinda want to see it. (Despite knowing the inevitable ending would be Candice barging in and yelling for Mom.)
5th-Jun-2012 12:44 pm (UTC)
♥ Thank you for being the only one to see the beauty of my twisted, evil brain.
5th-Jun-2012 01:43 pm (UTC)

Oh I see the beauty of your twisted, evil brain... just not this particular expression of it. :D

I haven't even outlined my Doof/Perry epic slashfic.

I know, right? I mean --- you know there's Doof/Perry slash out there, and that can't be better than a consenting Phineas and Ferb, can it?

(Yet. Still. Appalling idea.)

It is a great, intelligent show. With many, many running jokes. Also, the songs. The songs!

Yes, Perry the Platypus, and Doofenschmirtz is his arch nemesis always trying to take over the Tristate Area. The show itself goes into seriously questionable moments where I go "they do realise this is for kids, yes? I mean, what?"

I know for a fact there's very well drawn Perry/Doof slash fanart, so if there's no fic, the world is unjust.
